Philip Wills Enterprise Trophy 2016 - Nominations Please!

12/17/2016

Each year the Philip Wills Enterprise Trophy is awarded by the Enterprise Club for the flight judged to be the most ‘Enterprising’ of the previous calendar year.

What’s meant by ‘Enterprising’?  It could be a long flight exploiting different forms of lift by a high performance glider, perhaps on a day that no-one else did very much.  It could be a flight that involved popping out of clouds high over the Scottish Highlands, or perhaps a long distance flight in a low performance glider, or a flight in an unusual location.  Over the past few years, the trophy has been won by gliders from EB28 through an ASW20 to an Olympia 2b.  Distances have varied from 75 km to 750 km. Locations have been just about everywhere from Cornwall, round the London TMA, to John O’Groats.  What is it that all the winning flights have in common?  They all have the WOW! factor.  They are flights that make people go WOW! when they hear about them.  Many would not have been eligible for any of the regular BGA trophies.

If you know of a flight made in the UK in 2016 that you feel has the WOW! factor, please nominate it for the trophy.   Nominations should be made to the Secretary of the Enterprise Club, Andrew Reid at Andrew.G.Reid@BTInternet.com. Ideally, nominations should be accompanied by a short description of why you feel the flight should be awarded the trophy and an IGC logger file.  Self nominations are acceptable. Nominations must be submitted by 31 January 2017, but preferably earlier!

Competition Enterprise 2017 will be at the Devon and Somerset Gliding Club, North Hill, from 1-8 July. You can find out more about Competition Enterprise at http://www.compenterprise.uk/. There are still a few places left – to register interest please ...

As you may be aware, Matt Wright sadly died last Sunday, whilst participating in the sport he loved.  Matt was a truly wonderful person and great friend to many pilots.  We will all miss his infectious laugh, wonderful film making and his amazing flying.  Everyone at Competition Enterprise will miss him, as will everyone who knew him.   Thank you Matt for being epic.  X
